Here is another Wood Duck from the coldest morning of my recent Better than Bosque Workshop. The fog over the water was so thick that it made capturing great images difficult when we first set up, but it quickly transformed into epic photography as the sun rose and began to burn it off. The still water was perfect for low-angle views, with magical autumn colours framing the ornamental Wood Duck.
Coastal Brown Bear Cub with Salmon Dinner
A Coastal Brown Bear Cub with freshly caught salmon during my Ultimate Brown Bear Photography Workshop Photo Tour in September. We had some pretty epic opportunities with this bear cub throughout the trip, but the afternoon I made this image stands out as one of my favourite times in Katmai National Park; we were the very last group in the park, just us and the bears - smile!

Coastal Brown Bear Cub Showing Off Fresh Salmon
A Coastal Brown (Grizzly) Bear shows off a fresh pink salmon in gorgeous light against out-of-focus Alaskan autumn colours. My group was treated to some incredible moments during my ULTIMATE BROWN BEARS of KATMAI SALMON FISHING WORKSHOP.
Cutest Bear Cub with Lipstick & Announcing Christopher Dodds Cross-Canada SONY Roadshow
Have you ever caught a bear cub playing with lipstick? LOL. This Coastal Brown Bear cub has just finished eating a freshly caught salmon. I used the tilting rear screen and placed the camera on the ground to get a low and intimate view in beautiful Alaskan autumn light. Loads of fishing bear images to follow after an amazing Ultimate Coastal Brown Bears of Katmai Alaska Adventure Workshop.

Least Sandpiper Reflection
A Least Sandpiper from my Best of Bosque workshop last December. We were at the Crane ponds for the last drops of light, and the air was so still that the reflections were fantastic. Most photographers were lying in the mud trying to get infinite out-of-focus backgrounds, but we chose to work with our tripods fully extended to maximize the reflections.
Bald Eagle sub-adult with fish
The first drops of morning light crested the mountains behind us in Kenai Fjords National Park at the bottom of the tide in Kachemak Bay as we lay on the wet rocks at the water's edge; then the tide turned, and a wave gently lapped up into my lens hood. I made this image just at that moment. The lens was fine after a careful cleaning - smile.
The darker markings amongst the white head and tail feathers, with the white markings on the dark wing feathers, indicate this is likely a 3.5-year-old Eagle.
Snow Goose flying in nice light
A Snow Goose takes flight in the morning light from my recently concluded Best of Bosque workshop. Most of the cranes and Snow Geese had left the safety of the pond before the best light. Having a lot fewer birds made it easier to isolate single birds as they took off to head to the corn fields to eat.
Atlantic puffin in flight in golden light
A Puffin changes direction while on final approach in the last drops of golden light.
The pose with diagonal wings and the head position with the bill clear of the body/wings align with the golden light and catchlight in the eye to make this a keeper :)
Atlantic puffin flying with fish at first light
We were all down on the beach and ready before the sun rose at 04:48 and there really weren’t any birds flying around. The air was warm and still. As the intensity of the sun rose, a gentle breeze turned gusty and Puffins started to appear with bills full of fish. The first dozen flew away from us as they landed, but then the wind shifted and we had dozens of amazing opportunities as they brought home loads of fish for their babies - smile.
Happy Superb Owl Day
What is Superb Owl Day? While it likely existed offline before its internet usage, the earliest known posting about "superb owl" was by Twitter user @shawnw on February 3rd, 2008. That day, the tweeted, "Superb Owl party tonight!". Google assumes that Superb Owl Day is simply Super Bowl Sunday misspelled. Regardless, it has become fun to share owl images on Super Bowl Sunday. Enjoy the game & enjoy the owl images all over social media - smile.
