A Bald Eagle banks out of the shadows, illuminated by the very last drops of golden light during my recently concluded Eagles Galore workshop in Alaska. We had some epic weather, flat water and amazing light with both groups using all of our allotment of boat time (with a little extra bonus). Join me in Alaska next March for an Epic Alaskan Eagle adventure workshop!

Bald Eagles Tumbling
Bald Eagles fighting over a fish with locked talons tumbling toward the ground = a heart stopping moment. At first it was the thrill of it happening right in front of us, then it was the fear that they would crash into the ground. The thief got the fish and they both released as they were about to hit the ground….oh, and the photographers got their images - smile.

Bald Eagle with breakfast
Here is a Bald Eagle with its fresh breakfast captured at first light on Kachemak Bay (near Homer), Alaska. I love the intensity of the stare! Captured with a Sony alpha 1 camera using bird-eye auto-focus and a Sony 600mm f/4 lens with a Sony 1.4 X Teleconverter. Join me in Alaska for my annual Bald Eagles Galore Workshop in March. There will be plenty of opportunities to make images of fishing Eagles - smile. Learn more HERE.
Ross's Goose
Ross’s Goose facts:
A tiny goose with black wingtips, the Ross’s Goose (Chen rossii, Oie de Ross) is about 40% smaller than the more abundant white phase Snow Goose. The Snow Goose is larger and has a larger bill without the greenish base and has a black grin patch along it’s bill edge (black “lips”). It breeds in the central Arctic and winters primarily in central California, but it is becoming more frequent farther east. It is named in honor of Bernard R. Ross, a Hudson’s Bay Company factor at Fort Resolution in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Atlantic puffin in flight in golden light
A Puffin changes direction while on final approach in the last drops of golden light.
The pose with diagonal wings and the head position with the bill clear of the body/wings align with the golden light and catchlight in the eye to make this a keeper :)
Atlantic puffin bringing home breakfast
Be sure to let me know when to move past the Puffin with fish pictures; I have enough new content to post a new one every day for another year (at least). We had an awesome lunch in the lighthouse and went back down to the beach as the tide turned and the Puffins started to bring back loads of fish. Everyone was full and happy - smile.
Razorbill in flight with Capelin fish
Unlike the Puffins that usually circle a few times before landing and scurrying into their burrows, the Razorbills usually just fly straight in on the first attempt. This Razorbill made a few attempts before it landed, and banked right in front of us a few times before finally landing.
Atlantic Puffin with fish on green in golden light
Are you getting sick of Puffin images yet? How about Puffin with fish images? LOL.
If you really want to up your birds in flight game, try turning the camera to vertical or portrait orientation: the challenge is a tough one, but will help you learn to acquire fast moving targets more reliably - smile.
Atlantic puffin The Twist
After our fantastic crew (Janine, Brigitte and Jean-Paul) served an amazing gourmet dinner (braided salmon and cod with aux gratin potato, broccoli, tomato and pepper casserole and sautéed purple cabbage followed by the best lemon meringue pie that I have ever had), we ventured out for more Puffin Photography. The Puffins were all flying back and forth to the water for baths and a few of us got some great airborne shakes in the golden light…..the ones who were willing to skip photographing only the puffins with fish - smiles.

Tufted Puffin in flight with feather
Here’s a Tufted Puffin flying straight up the cliff towards me against receding sea foam below. The Sony bird eye auto-focus really improved the keeper rate while doing this type of extreme birds in flight photography - smile.
Tufted Puffin Portrait Bad Hair Day
A curious Tufted Puffin was photographed while pointing my lens straight down off the cliffs of Saint Paul Island during my recent workshop.
Parakeet Auklet in flight vertical
Here’s another from the cliffs of Saint Paul Island. I always make a point of practicing shooting full frame verticals when it is windy and there are loads of subjects :)
Pribilofs Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch In Flight 2
The second time I have been lucky enough to photograph this species in flight. See my last effort in my blog post from 2020 Pribilofs Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch In Flight.
Horned Puffin in flight over the Bering Sea
Once again, the Sony Alpha 1 paired with the 200-600 zoom lens proved to be the most versatile kit during my recent Saint Paul Island workshop. It is easy to carry around and hold all day during our long cliffside shoots. Here I am only a few seconds before making the Horned Puffin image above:
Tufted Puffin BIRD OF A FEATHER
Here’s a Tufted Puffin from my recently concluded Saint Paul Island Workshop. Birds often bring nesting material back to the nest, and I have seen my share of plastic waste, so this one came together nicely when the bird’s pose, background and that feather all aligned in a pleasing way :)
Tufted Puffin in flight over the Bering Sea
We had some EPIC opportunities for birds in flight during my recent Saint Paul Island workshop. This is a Tufted Puffin in flight over the Bering Sea. Photographed hand-held from my little perch on a cliff - smile.
Atlantic puffin in flight with Caplin
It’s not too late! There is still only one room left for my August 10 to 13, 2022 Deluxe Atlantic Puffins Galore and so much more workshop. Don’t miss this chance to live a real life adventure: Newly renovated Lighthouse accommodations, gourmet food, Puffins Galore and so much more.
